Facebook 101

The profile photo: This is crucial. If you don’t have one you like, you an always find a good photo of you from someone else’s album. Click "make profile picture" on the bottom right below the photo.

Photos: There is a difference between photos you post to your wall and photos you place in an album. Placing photos on your wall will put them in a separate space from your regular photos. It’s a little complicated, and it’s probably the most confusing aspect of photo sharing for new users. If your cell phone is equipped with a camera phone, you can send photos directly to your Facebook page by sending them to mobile@facebook.com. To do this, you’ll first need to set up Facebook mobile by clicking ‘settings’ then ‘mobile.’ You can set up separate albums for different family events, holidays and new additions, then share them with anyone in the world, whether they’re on Facebook or not.

Friends: Find immediate family by searching around for the names. Once they’ve friended you, you can browse through their friends to find everyone else in the clan. Before too long, it will be a virtual family reunion every time you sign in.

The feed: Once you’ve added all of your family members, their status updates and photos will appear in your "news feed" every time you sign in. Facebook recently implemented two news feeds: one with the most-commented updates and the "live feed" for up-to-the-minute updates. This can be a blessing and a curse. It’s fun to peek into your family’s everyday lives, but you might not need to hear about the out-of-control college party your nephew attended the previous night. If you don’t necessarily want or need constant updates from a particular friend, you can hide them from your news feed. Just hover your mouse to the right of their update and a ‘hide’ button will appear.

The games: One aspect of Facebook that has taken off in popularity is the social games available. Whether you want to be a mobster or a farmer, there’s a game on Facebook just waiting for you. Remember, though, that as you play, the game will bombard all of your friends with updates on your various achievements in the game. This can become annoying to your "friends," and it might lead them to hide you in their news feeds.
