Diaper Drive a Big Success
A local women's Bible study group, collected more than 10,000 diapers and received donations to purchase another 2,500 diapers during at the first Diaper Drive.
The women exceeded the original goal of 5,000. The event benefitted Bluffton Self Help. At least 100 packages of wipes, diaper creams and other supplies were also collected at the event held at Chick-fil-A in Bluffton.
"Mrs. Ida Martin (founder of Bluffton Self Help) taught me that children should never have to suffer for {others'} decisions," said Jenny Haney, director of Bluffton Self Help.
Diapers can average $100 a month. Many low-income families can only afford to purchase one diaper a day for their infants. When this local group discovered this, they knew there was something they could do to help out. Their recent Bible studies had challenged them to live out their faith by helping out their neighbors and the Diaper Drive was the perfect fit.
"I was so overwhelmed by the outpour of generosity our community demonstrated," said Amanda Ware, member of the Bible study and Diaper Drive organizer. "This will go a long way in helping families in our area."
When Lowcountry Moms, an organized group of local moms in Beaufort County, learned of this event, they joined in the effort, hosting a Spirit Night at Jim N' Nicks to help raise funds for the drive.
The diapers will be distributed from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at Bluffton Self Help, 1264 May River Road, Bluffton. Parents need to bring proof of residency in Bluffton: A ultility bill or lease in their name, a photo ID and birth certificates for each child needing diapers.
