Charleston Stage, founded by Playwright Julian Wiles in 1978, is South Carolina’s largest professional theatre company. At the Historic Dock Street Theatre, which has just recently undergone a $19 million renovation, Charleston Stage has presented over 150 productions and played to a collective audience of over one million strong. Charleston Stage employs 13 full-time staff members, guest artists, and scores of actors, dancers, singers and musicians and TheatreWings High School Apprentices.

The Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts at The College of Charleston is an award-winning undergraduate theatre program and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).  It offers a BA in Theatre with five concentrations and serves over 140 majors.  Alumni have attended some of the finest graduate schools in the country, performed on Broadway, or have worked in film and television.  Each year it presents a most diverse season, which often includes classics, musicals, and contemporary productions.  Its annual summer Shakespeare Project makes it the only theatrical organization in Charleston to regularly produce the works of the Bard.

Their 2010/11 season begins in September with The Greater Park Circle Play Festival with four weekends of new works (full length and 10 minute plays) in staged readings.  The rest of their season features three adult shows (one of which is operatic) and four youth shows.   They also have a wide range of acting and singing classes for all ages, and workshops throughout the year with casting consultants and talent agents from New York or LA.  They have a month long artistic residency in NYC during the summer (Summer in the City) where participants reside in Lincoln Center and individual courses of intensive studies are pursued in five artistic disciplines.  They also host a variety of other arts organizations out of their black box theatre in North Charleston's popular Olde Village in the historic Park Circle area.

Theatre 99 has shows every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. Theatre 99 has a bar with beer, wine and sodas. It is a non-smoking venue. Shows are typically rated PG-13, but since it is based on audience suggestion, you never know what is going to happen. Shows are not appropriate for kids under 11 years old. Most shows contain adult language.
