When you encourage your child to use his or her imagination to write a story, it not only fosters artistic expression and creativity, it helps them to clarify their thinking. Most importantly, it helps them learn the essential skills of reading and writing.
With a new educational app for iPhones and iPads, created by Lisa Annelouise Rentz of Beaufort, children of all ages can have fun and express themselves while learning in the process.
The “Pencils, Words & Kids” creative writing process engages young writers through seven filters:
- Be a Reader First
- How & Why to Write
- How to Use the App
- Kids Speak About Writing
- Prompts
- Responding to Creative Writing
- Sharing
The prompts are friendly, in-depth and re-usable, riddled with vocabulary and a smattering of arts and crafts.
Entries include subjects such as how to be a creative writer, developing characters, what to write about, writing tools, advice, what inspired authors to write and much more.
Rentz has published short stories, illustrations, and essays in a wide variety of publications, including the Oxford American, Liars' League London (click here for more information). She has also worked with children through the Lowcountry Arts Integration Project and at ARTworks community center in Beaufort.
